During the 60's & 70's many artists, poets
and writer moved to the Mojacar area repopulating the once
abandoned village, many renovating old cortijos and village
houses. The local town hall encourage the new comers to
repopulate the area after mass migration in the 1950's by giving
away land and property to those who would rebuild and inhabit
them. Those times have long gone and the pueblo is a popular
place to live with it's narrow cobbled streets and white washed
houses. There are many bars and restaurants and a number of shop
mostly selling artisan products and tourist related
souvenirs. You will see on houses
and cars the Indalo Man a local emblem that is supposed to bring
protection. It was first discovered in a cave near Velez Rubio
in the north of the province. Mojacar is also famed for being
the birth place of Walt Disney or so I am told. During the month
of July the village holds it annual fiesta of the Moors &
Christians and visitors from around the world come to see its
dazzling parades.
