Information about Carboneras, Almeria

I have wanted to visit Carboneras for some time now but despite it being less than a 40 minute drive from Mojacar I hadn't managed it until recently. I am so glad that I did as it’s not only a beautiful drive through the mountains with stunning views of the coastline to get there but the town itself is amazing. Even on a Sunday morning in December the temperature was a very pleasant 24 degrees which made the long leisurely walk along the beautiful beach promenade and through the town’s narrow streets a day to remember.

Carboneras boasts over 17km of great beaches including the Blue Flag beach of El Ancon, Los Muertos (nudist), Las Marinicas and El Agarrobico.

The town of Carboneras is a busy tourist destination for sun seekers, beach goers, water sports enthusiasts and Nature Lovers alike or for just simply enjoying the wonderful views of the sea and mountainous countryside. The town is set within the nature reserve of Cabo de Gata-Nijar.

The town is steeped in history which surrounds the Castle of San Andres and has several other buildings of historic interest such as Casa de los Fuentes (House of the Springs) which was built as a palace in the 1800´s and is now the Town Hall. The Torre Del Rayo (Tower of Lightning) and Castillo de Mesas Roldan are from the 1700´s. In addition to the historic buildings there are more than ample modern day café bars, restaurants and shops to enjoy. The colourful and bustling weekly market is held on Thursdays.

The Fiestas de San Antonio is held in June and a recreation of the Battle of the Moors and the Christians take place on the sea front. In August there is the Fiesta de los Pescadores (Fishermans Festival).

The capital city Almeria and Almeria Airport is a 57km 40 minute drive with Murcia and Alicante airports being 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 and a half hours away.

You could choose to visit for an hour or two or as long as time allowed visiting this beautiful coastal town and I am sure you would not be disappointed.
